Army Surplus Coats

A coat that was originally worn by sailors of the American and European navies is the pea coat. The pea coat is usually navy in color and made of heavy wool. Other characteristics of the pea coat include wide lapels, fronts that are double-breasted, navy anchor buttons that are large and made of wood or metal and vertical or slash pockets. Similar to the pea coat Powdercoating is the black dress jacket with silver buttons displaying an eagle with its wings spread. Between the wings is an anchor surrounded by stars. It is also double-breasted in a dark blue/black color with three pockets and sleeves that reach to the finger tips.

Another army surplus coat is the Swiss Great War wool coat. This is a full-length coat made of 100% wool. Armies worldwide wore coats like this that were extremely warm while protecting their countries. Each coat has a color or feature that is unique to its country. The Swiss Great War wool coat comes in a heather gray/ blue. The shoulders have epaulets and there are Swiss insignia buttons for buttoning the coat and doubled up for design. The cuff for the arm is very long to provide for additional warmth. Up the back is a 20-inch pleat that buttons from top to bottom. The reason why this pleat is so long is from wearing this coat while being mounted on a horse.

The United States Military bear liner coat is another army surplus coat. It is made of heavy duty fleece that is woven very tightly together. The fleece is all polyester with a lush interior piling. One can overheat wearing this coat during strenuous activity as there are no vents allowing the coat to breathe. There are deep front pockets with flaps and Velcro closures. Velcro is also used as closures for the wrists. This coat is recommended for extreme sports and is a multi-functional piece of clothing.

The Yugoslavian Combat coat is somewhat different from other coats and some consider it to look better than other military coats. It has a large hidden map pocket and there are cargo pockets on the front side of the coat which are large. The length of the coat is long for good coverage and warmth. The waist has a draw cord to prevent drafts and the pocket inside is large enough to carry all of one’s belongings so that an additional day pack is not necessary. The coat is very warm and typically comes in gray.
